IUD & IUS Coil Check: Peace of Mind & Reassurance
Ensuring Your Comfort and Confidence
Once your hormonal coil (IUS) or copper coil (IUD) has been fitted, it provides years of highly effective, “fit and forget” protection. However, having a routine check is an excellent way to ensure everything is exactly where it should be, giving you complete peace of mind. A coil check is a quick, simple, and reassuring appointment for women who already have a coil in place.
Whether you’ve just had your coil fitted, are due for your annual review, or simply have a concern you’d like to discuss, this dedicated appointment provides the reassurance you need. At MyMenopauseSupport.org, I offer a gentle and professional coil check service to answer your questions and confirm that your coil is continuing to work for you effectively and comfortably.
Coil Check
Why is a Coil Check Important?
A routine check provides an important opportunity to:
- Confirm Correct Placement: We will ensure the coil remains correctly positioned within the uterus to provide maximum effectiveness.
- Check the Threads: We will locate the fine threads that extend from your cervix, confirming the coil has not been expelled.
- Address Any Concerns: It is the perfect time to discuss any changes in your bleeding pattern, any discomfort, or any other questions you may have.
- Plan for the Future: We can discuss the replacement date for your coil and make a plan for your ongoing contraceptive or HRT needs.
What to Expect During Your Coil Check Appointment
A coil check is a very straightforward and non-invasive procedure. It is much quicker and simpler than a fitting.
- The Process: The appointment typically takes only 10-15 minutes. You will be asked to lie down on the examination couch. I will use a speculum to gently visualize your cervix. In most cases, I can see the threads straight away, which confirms the coil is in the correct place. A physical examination is often not needed.
- Comfort and Reassurance: The procedure is not painful. I will talk you through what I am doing and will answer any questions you have. The vast majority of the time, the check provides instant reassurance that everything is as it should be.

When Should I Have My Coil Checked?
Initial Follow-Up
It is good practice to have your first check-up around 4-6 weeks after your initial fitting. This is to ensure the coil has settled into the correct position.
If You Have Concern
You should schedule a check if you are unable to feel your threads, if you think you can feel the hard plastic of the coil itself, or if you are experiencing any unusual pain, bleeding, or discharge.
As Part of Your Annual Review
Incorporating a coil check into your annual HRT or wellness review is an easy and convenient way to ensure ongoing peace of mind.
