Coil Removal
Gentle & Reassuring Coil (IUD/IUS) Removal
A Simple, Quick, and Comfortable Procedure
Whether your hormonal coil (IUS) or copper coil (IUD) has reached its replacement date, your contraceptive needs have changed, or you are ready to transition to a different health strategy, the removal process is a very straightforward and important step.
Many women feel a degree of anxiety about having their coil removed, often based on stories they have heard or a previous uncomfortable experience. At MyMenopauseSupport.org, my absolute priority is to make your coil removal a gentle, quick, and comfortable procedure. I provide a calm, private, and reassuring environment where your comfort is paramount, ensuring the process is as simple and stress-free as possible.
Coil Removal
Reasons for Coil Removal
You may be looking to have your coil removed for several reasons, and we will discuss your personal situation during your consultation. Common reasons include:
Routine Replacement
The coil has reached the end of its licensed duration (e.g., 5 years for a Mirena used for HRT, or 10 years for a copper coil).
Changing Needs
You may wish to try for a pregnancy, or you may no longer require contraception.
Managing Side Effect
While most women get on very well with their coil, a small number may experience side effects they are not comfortable with
Transitioning Care
You may be moving from using a hormonal coil for contraception to relying on it solely as part of your HRT, or transitioning away from it entirely.
What to Expect
The Removal Procedure
The removal of an IUD or IUS is typically a very quick and simple process, usually taking only a minute or two.
The Process
You will be asked to lie down on the examination couch, similar to when you have a smear test. I will use a speculum to gently open the walls of the vagina, just as with a fitting. I will then locate the fine threads of the coil that extend from your cervix. Using a pair of specialised forceps, I will gently and steadily pull on the threads, and the T-shaped arms of the coil will fold up, allowing it to slide out easily.
Comfort and Reassurance
I will talk you through every single step. Most women experience a mild, brief cramping sensation as the coil is removed, but this passes very quickly. It is generally much more comfortable and quicker than a fitting procedure.
After the Procedure
You can get up and resume your normal activities straight away. You may have some very light spotting or mild cramping for the rest of the day, which can be managed with simple pain relief like paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Important Considerations After Removal
Immediate Return to Fertility: If you are still in your reproductive years, your fertility will return to its normal level immediately after the coil is removed. If you do not wish to become pregnant, it is essential to have another form of contraception ready to use straight away. Replacing Your Coil: If you are having the coil removed for a routine replacement, a new one can be fitted during the very same appointment. This is a convenient option that ensures you have continuous contraceptive and/or HRT coverage.
