Contraceptive Implant Fitting & Removal
The Contraceptive Implant: A Discreet, Long-Term Option
A Simple, Effective, Estrogen-Free Contraceptive Choice
The contraceptive implant is a small, flexible plastic rod, about the size of a matchstick, that is placed discreetly under the skin of your upper arm. It works by slowly releasing a very low dose of a progestin hormone to prevent pregnancy. For women seeking a highly effective, long-acting, “fit and forget” contraceptive method that contains no estrogen, the implant is an excellent choice.
As you navigate the changes of midlife, you may be looking for a simple and reliable solution that doesn’t require daily pills or regular appointments. At MyMenopauseSupport.org, I provide a skilled, gentle, and comfortable implant fitting and removal service, offering you a discreet and powerful tool for managing your contraceptive needs.
Contraceptive Implant
Why Consider a Contraceptive Implant in Midlife?
The implant offers several key advantages for women in the perimenopausal stage:
It is Estrogen-Free
This makes it a very safe and suitable option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-based contraception, such as smokers over 35 or those with certain medical conditions like a history of blood clots or migraines with aura.
It is Highly Effective
The implant is more than 99% effective, making it one of the most reliable forms of contraception available. This provides excellent peace of mind during a time of unpredictable fertility.
It is Discreet and Convenient
Once fitted, the implant is not visible and provides continuous contraception for three years. You don't have to think about it at all.
It Can Be Used with HRT
You can safely use the contraceptive implant alongside your Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) regimen.
A Simple Process
The Fitting & Removal Procedure
I am committed to making both the fitting and removal of your implant a quick, comfortable, and stress-free experience.
The Fitting
- The procedure is very straightforward and usually takes only a few minutes.
- I will first administer a local anesthetic to completely numb the area on your inner, upper arm. You will not feel any pain during the fitting.
- Once the area is numb, the implant is inserted just under the skin using a special sterile applicator. No stitches are needed.
- We will place a small dressing over the site, which you will keep on for a few days. You may have some mild bruising or tenderness afterwards, which is normal.
The Removal
- Removal is also a simple procedure performed under local anesthetic.
- I will make a tiny incision near the tip of the implant and gently guide it out.
- The procedure is very quick, and again, no stitches are typically required. A small dressing is applied to the site. If you wish, a new implant can be inserted at the same time through the same small opening.
An Important Consideration: Your Bleeding Pattern
The most common side effect of the contraceptive implant is a change in your bleeding pattern. This is very individual. Some women find their periods stop altogether, which can be a welcome benefit. Others may experience irregular bleeding, spotting, or more frequent or prolonged bleeding. We will have an open discussion about this during your consultation to ensure the implant is the right fit for your lifestyle and preferences.
